RoomCaption turns a conversation into live captions that everyone reads on their own phone. Here's how to use it, answers to common questions, and how to reach us.
Join a conversation
- Open RoomCaption.
- Tap Scan a QR code and point your camera at the code on the host's screen. Or tap Join with a code and type the six digits they give you.
- Read the captions as people talk. To take part, type a reply and send it.
You don't need an account to join, and joining is always free. No app? Open the invite link, or go to roomcaption.com, in any phone browser.
Start captions
- Open RoomCaption and tap Start captions. Allow the microphone when your phone asks.
- Put your phone near the people talking. Captions appear as they speak.
- To let others read along, share the conversation: show them the QR code, or give them the six-digit code.
- When you're done, end the conversation. Everything in the room is deleted.
Common questions
Is it free?
Joining is always free. You can start captions with a free trial, without an account.
Do the other people need the app?
No. They can join from any phone browser with the QR code, invite link or six-digit code.
How accurate are the captions?
Automatic captions can be wrong, especially with background noise, strong accents or several people talking at once. Keep the phone close to whoever is speaking. RoomCaption doesn't replace a professional interpreter when accuracy matters.
Which languages does it support?
The web app at roomcaption.com offers 20 languages, including English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Can I caption a video call or audio from another app?
Not in the app yet; it listens through the microphone. On a computer, the web app at roomcaption.com can also caption audio from a browser tab.
Is my conversation private?
- Captions and replies shared in a room are end-to-end encrypted. Our servers pass them on but can't read them.
- Everything in a room is deleted when the room ends, or after six hours.
- Anyone with the QR code, invite link or six-digit code can join, so share them only with people you want in the conversation.
- Read our privacy policy.
The code doesn't work.
- A code works only while the conversation is open. Check the six digits with the host.
- After too many wrong codes, wait 10 minutes and try again.
Captions stopped.
- Check your internet connection.
- The free trial may have run out.
- Tap Start captions to try again.
The app can't use the microphone or camera.
Go to your phone's Settings, find RoomCaption, and turn on Microphone (for captions) or Camera (for scanning QR codes).
Someone sent something inappropriate in a conversation.
- If you're the host, end the conversation. Everyone leaves and the room is deleted. Start a new one to get a new code.
- To report it to us, email support@roomcaption.com with the time and what happened. We can't read rooms, so we can't check what was sent.
How do I delete my data?
- Without an account, we hold almost nothing that identifies you.
- Deleting the app removes anything it saved on your phone.
- For anything else, email privacy@roomcaption.com.
